FINDING WEB DESIGN CLIENTS

So how is this done and how to approach clients for web design… like anything else this will require practice.  You need to first have a few clients under your belt and in your portfolio.  Start with friends and family first.  Put the ‘bat signal’ out and let the world know that you can make great websites and how it will improve their business.  After all, you don’t just make websites, you completely transform their most important piece of brand identity… the entire website.  You’re going to make them stand out from their competitors.  So start with friends and family then leverage a testimonial (or two) and from there, find a category that you like working on.  This can be data companies, construction, lawyers, or whatever else it is but narrow down your web design offering after about 5 projects.  The riches are in the niches, here’s a video to help:

WHERE TO GET WEB DESIGN CLIENTS

From here, use Linkedin and cold email approach.  Cold email is a great way to start as it is easily scalable and you can hit multiple company’s inboxes (you should be sending them to the CEO) in a short amount of time.  Linkedin can easily help you narrow down your target audience with their filters.  Find a tradeshow, too.  Get on the exhibitor list and scrape the heck out of it to find a list and hit that list hard.  The tradeshow should be industry specific and even down the line, consider partnering with the tradeshow down the line too.  Once you have your sights on what companies you should target, cold emailing is very effective. It is more practical at scale, but a totally different approach.  More on that in a different post… this is more on how to find clients as a web designer.

HOW TO FIND WEB DESIGN CLIENTS ON LINKEDIN

As mentioned earlier, Linkedin is a great spot. The platform is full of decision makers on there specifically to do business. Bingo. Search for companies in your niche on Google then find in the footer the little Linkedin logo to go to their Linkedin profile page.  Narrow down to the CEO and MAYBE CMO to start an engagement.  It only takes a few CEOs in a niche to get the ball rolling to send out invites every day.  Everybody wants to build their group so people will be receptive.  Once a connection is made, you’re in.  Start doing posts about previous work done and results you brought.  Wait for comments and when those are made, send that person a message asking if they would like to get on a discovery call with you.  Refer to our roadmap and take it from there. Getting web design clients doesn’t have to be the hardest thing in the world, BUT you do need a process to help.

HOW TO GET WEB DESIGN CLIENTS

You need a process. I’ve said this before. You need something that can be repeated and duplicated even without you.

When you have a framework that you follow, nothing ‘pops up’ anymore. You’re in full control with both hands on the wheel. And from here, you can be the one that takes the sales/discovery calls and have contractors that do the web design for you. It becomes less of ‘I have to do everything all day long’ to ‘how I get web design clients’ then following a step by step process. Web design clients can be tricky sometimes, though. Be sure to benchmark where there traffic is BEFORE and what you’ve provided AFTER and set expectations to avoid and grey area with the client.  Deliver good results and keep in communication with them and you’ll be good.

This is alot to take in so lets summarize how to find web design clients online:

  • get your first client(s) from friends or family

  • get a case study

  • leverage that case study when prospecting new clients
  • reach out to new prospects via cold email, cold call and Linkedin (share the case study & positive results
  • get the new prospects interested then get them on a discovery call
  • follow a sales process
